One kitchen item I could not live without is definitely the spatula. Daily I make an egg over-easy, and as you know, a spatula is key in turning over eggs, and pancakes, and other delightful foods. I have a KitchenAid spatula that a friend DESIGNED (she was an industrial designer for KitchenAid)!!! Also I have just gotten this awesome FROG SPATULA:

Not that I needed another spatula. But seriously. It's a spatula that looks like a FROG.

I can't live without my kitchen shears. I use them for EVERYTHING from cutting up a whole chicken to slicing through packaging.
I also really love my red oval Le Creuset casserole dish.

The kitchen item I can't live without is my coffee maker... heehee. I need the caffeine to get everything done! J/K! I find myself most often reaching for the tongs to handle any type of cooking. It's one of my multi-purpose utensils that goes far beyond it's conventional useage.

The Wanton Seed Stitch here! You can reach me at stellamaris44 at yahoo dot com. I could NOT live without my chef's knife. I can use it to prep so many different foods in so many different ways. It's just the right weight for me, and holds a beautiful edge which I hone frequently. I love, love, love that knife.

The kitchen thing I can't live without, huh?

Well, let's see. This month I've actually had to live without most of my kitchen - my husband is travelling for work and the kids and I decided to be tag-alongs. Staying in an extended stay hotel with an extremely sparsely furnished kitchen has made food prep ... let's just say it's been interesting. But I've managed quite well, especially considering I've got no oven, only 4 pans to work with and only 3 knives.

I'd have to say, the one thing I've had the hardest time working without would be a wide assortment of mixing and serving bowls. I'm always making things like different dips for fresh fruits and fresh salsas and fresh salads... Having only one set of mixing bowls, the smallest of which is scarcely bigger than a cereal bowl, has been beyond difficult! I've had to get creative and store, mix and serve things in coffee mugs for lack of decent bowls this month!!

The kitchen thing I can't live without? My recipe box.

I can pretty much find workarounds for just about any implement that I don't have (egg separator? I use the shells or pour it through the tines of a fork. Cherry pitter? Time to find that pointed tip from the icing bag. Cake pan too small? Use less batter.). But if I don't have my recipe box, it doesn't even feel like my kitchen.

The one thing I love in the kitchen is this magnet that shows how many cups in a whatever and whatnot...kitchen measurements. It's right there on the fridge when you need it and SO handy! The lady that lived in my apartment before me left it behind and I love that thing now.

My favorite kitchen item would have to be the skillet. I know it's rather boring and mundane, but I'm a student and i live in a tiny apartment. This means that I can only have the essentials to cook with (it wasn't until late May that I picked up a whisk, for instance, and that was a major purchase for me). Unlike my baking pans, which have given me some trouble (had to figure out how to adjust the heat so that the bottoms of my brownies and cakes wouldn't burn), my skillet has never given me a bit of trouble and I use it every day, sometimes more than once a day, to cook all sots of things. It's also the only item I don't hate washing - I normally hate, hate, hate doing the dishes, but when contemplating all the yummy things I can make with my skillet, I don't hesitate to give it a wash. :)

My first time here from your post on lamb at foodbuzz and just in time for the giveaway. yay!

as for the 1 thing that i need in my kitchen (besides hundred other things), that would be my kithcen timer. I can never keep track of times and the stove doesnt come with a build-in so that really is a help of il end up with burned food all the time.

The kitchen item I cannot live without is my *drum roll*
Mixer!
It makes creamy mashed potatoes for the baby, icings, cakes... tons of stuff~!
Mixer is close with a pasta strainer and food processor. Food processor because I have a 1 year old that I use it for at least twice a day.
Pasta strainer because I love me some thin whole wheat pasta... plus it can rinse fruit with ease, and drain extra fat out of sausages and booger.
It also makes a great hat!

I don't think I could live without my wire whisk, I seem to use it all the time. I should have 3-4 of them as often as I use/need them. I'm constantly washing it.

I can't live without my glass of wine while cooking, then my bamboo cutting boards and my Tramontia professional chef's and santoku knives that I purchased as Sams Club--these are dishwasher safe and sharp!!! They also hold a good edge for a long time. I have expensive knives, but I like these as much or more.

Like my dad says: as long as you have one pot, you can do just about anything. So for me it has to be the pot. I live in a tiny, tiny apartment and I only have a few kitchen pieces, and that's the one I've wound up cooking nearly everything in.

Second place would be my oven, for largely the same reason!

It changes, as I am dreadfully fickle. But right now, this moment, I am in love with the microplane grater I recently acquired. Going a bit mad with it I am afraid.

That, or if we're going food based, the fresh herbs I grow in pots. They do so much to a meal, they really do.

Fun giveaway! Mystery goodies? I'm in...

The one kitchen item I could not live without? Boy, that's tougher than it sounds. If I had to choose just one it would have to be my GIANT cast iron skillet. (And the whisk, Kitchen Aid, food processor, blender, spatula, silicone scraper/spatula, Calphalon cookware, tea kettle, slow cooker, knifes, aaaaaaand parchment paper.) But since you said 'one thing', I won't mention those other items.

The one kitchen implement I couldn't live without is definitely the pepper grinder. I can use some fork-fu to flip things in a pan, and I can even bake in a plate or work around not having just the right implement for the job--but NOTHING, nothing at all, replaces the flavor of fresh black pepper. I'm so spoiled by it that pre-ground pepper just tastes like stale spice. It's a cheap and simple item that everyone should have in their kitchen.
